‘08 Halloween Costume!

31 10 2008

Those who know me know that I love being festive. So, after agonizing over not having enough time or money to come up with a halloween costume this year, a last-minute realization that I actually own a full adidas track suit inspired this year’s get-up:

Full Adidas track suit “borrowed” from mom’s closet circa 1995 – $0.00
RUN DMC T-Shirt borrowed from Matt – $0.00
DIY Fat Rope Gold Chains (from yarn) – $0.00
Black Oversized Eyeglasses borrowed from Matt – $0.00
DIY Adidas Sneakers (from reeboks) – $0.00

Hat borrowed from Koi – $0.00
Parading around as 1/3 of legendary hip-hop pioneer group, RUN DMC – PRICELESS
(and FREE!)

Trick-or-Treat!

this is my jam.

Seventh graders from the Ron Clark Academy perform “You Can Vote However You Like,” based on TI’s “Whatever You Like,” at the Coca-Cola Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Georgia.

I must say, the choreography is on point, the lyrics poignant, and the students demonstrate a pretty clear understanding of what’s at stake in this election. If this is how we can get youth excited about politics, then so be it. Now, if only they were old enough to vote.

Can You Vote?

30 10 2008

As we creep closer and closer to election day, I keep thinking of how vigilant we must be as voters. If you’re a newly registered voter, unsure of your voter status, or just want to make sure that your county doesn’t pull a fast one on ya, PLEASE CHECK THE STATUS OF YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION.

canivote.org is a non-partisan website run by the National Association of Secretaries of State, which routes you to your state’s voter verification page.

5 more days….is anyone else antsy or is it just me?

Shit Happens on Election Day

28 10 2008

With just one week left until election day, folks are getting edgy. The political atmosphere is thick with false accusations, assassination plots, and a general sense of desperation. While it looks as though Barack Obama is up in the polls, let’s heed his advice and not let up, not even for one second…because we all know that SHIT HAPPENS ON ELECTION DAY.

My homegirl, Barni, and her team at Video the Vote created this video to remind us that disenfranchisement is still ripe in this country, and we need to take creative steps to safeguard our elections. Video the Vote dispatches videographers and citizen journalists (regular folks like you and me) to monitor and document problem voter areas around the nation. If you’ve got a camera, or know someone who does, sign up to make sure the full story of Election Day gets told…

Voters are Confusing.

23 10 2008

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot about voter anomalies.

The homies at Fobbdeep have started an interesting discussion on Filipinos/Filipino-Americans for McCain.

Poplicks has shed some light on Muslims for McCain.

Colin Powell has boldly crossed party lines to endorse Barack Obama.

The Huffington Post has posted video interviews of Republicans for Obama.

…and so on.

While these folks’ uncharacteristic choices certainly perplex me (particularly the McCain supporters), I have to admit I respect their conviction. Whether or not I agree with their positions, at least these voters have chosen candidates that best support their values and their visions for the country.

On the other hand, I am completely boggled by one particular voter group:

The Undecideds.

Just two weeks before the election, these coveted voters have only begun to “lean.” It highly irritates me knowing that billions of campaign dollars & contributions have been spent trying to woo these folks. Let’s hope our next president isn’t decided by folks who need to toss a coin on election day.

CNN reported on undecided voters just a few days ago:

Banksy’s Village Pet Store & Charcoal Grill

21 10 2008

In NYC’s Greenwich Village, there sits a tiny little pet store where chicken nuggets sip barbecue sauce, bunny rabbits apply make-up, fish sticks swim in goldfish bowls, and surveillance cameras nurture their offspring.

None other than British street artist, Banksy, is responsible for the provocative Village Pet Store & Charcoal Grill at 89 W. 7th Ave. Using animatronics, Banksy has created a mind-opening exhibit that is completely visible to the public day and night through the storefront windows.

From Banksy (via Wooster Collective):

“New Yorkers dont care about art, they care about pets. So I’m exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals. If it’s art and you can see it from the street, I guess it could still be considered street art.”

Notcot has also posted a beautiful video of the exhibit at vimeo ( directed and edited by Seth Brau). Check it out here.

For those of you close enough to visit, the exhibit runs until Oct 31. Lucky.

We have a winner!

16 10 2008

After a rough start this season, Leanne Marshall, the self-proclaimed “fashion assassin,” was named Project Runway’s Season 5 winner. She wowed us week after week with her quirky, architectural designs. Her final collection, inspired by waves, was crafted and presented beautifully using a simple pallet of blues, whites, and creams. The best part? Over half of her sculptural, sophisticated, and modern collection was constructed with sustainable textiles! Leanne is my shero. Keep your eye on this rising eco-fashion star.
