Hurley Sashimi Handmade
24 11 2008It’s official. My DIY bug is BACK. The 2nd Annual Bindleball | Tulay Art Exhibit Opening Reception this past Saturday was good times. Stunning art by over 30 US & Philippines-based artists lined the mango-colored walls of the Manilatown Center, while folks mingled amidst yummy food, wine, comedy, dance crews, djs, and DIY vendors.

Enter Hurley Sashimi Handmade. I laid it all on the table – an assortment of hats, beanies, berets, neckwarmers, and a hurley sashimi original – “the beekeeper” – to culminate months of tireless crocheting. The response was positive – “These are beautiful!,” “Nice colors!,” “Did you invent these?,” and my personal fave, “Wait a minute, you made all these yourself? You don’t have a sweatshop or anything?”
The beekeeper was, by far, the crowd favorite.

Shameless Plug
18 11 2008This Saturday, November 22, from 6-10pm, yours truly will be setting up shop at the opening reception for TULAY: A Filipino & Fil-Am Art Exhibit at the I-Hotel in SF’s China/Manilatown. I’ll be slanging hand-crocheted beanies, neck warmers, and miscellaneous warm things just in time for the winter/holidaze. The art show, which coincides with Bindlestiff Studio’s 2nd Annual Bindleball, will be a landmark show featuring over 30 artists from the US and the Philippines.
I’ve been crocheting like mad for the past few weeks, so come out, feed your eyes, support the arts and my hustle! Get some early holiday shopping done and buy handmade. Cash Only, Please. (Apologies for hitting you up during the current economic sitcho)

Snapshots of Chicago Pt. 1
15 11 2008Jaymar and I have returned from our Chicago travels, and now that I’m unpacked, settled-in, and defrosted, I thought I’d share a few photos from our trip to the beautifully windy city that has come to be quite popular these days! It’s my goal to post some more detailed entries on our Chicago revelries, but for now, here are some of the highlights…
(click photos to enlarge)
A city built by world-renowned architects, Chicago boasts one of the most
breath-taking cityscapes I’ve ever seen…
by day.
Where I live, seasons are hard to come by. I was giddy to see fall leaves.
When in Chicago…
Post-victory Chicago = Obamania at its finest!

there’s already a movie…
6 11 2008well, a documentary…now with the perfect ending.
“Long before President-elect Barack Obama had even made up his mind to run for the highest office in the land, Edward Norton and his Class 5 Films production company were already documenting the Senator’s life. The 39-year-old actor said that he became inspired by Obama’s 2004 speech at the National Democratic Convention and felt inspired to capture someone from his generation — and not his parent’s — inspiring so many and rising in leadership…”
Ed Norton is one of my faves (and we have the same birthday!). Can’t wait.

it’s a new day.
5 11 2008As I woke up this morning, the fuzziness of last night’s celebration came into sharp focus as I realized that, this time, there were no close calls or stolen elections, but instead the headlines read that Barack Obama is really going to be the next president of the United States. Throughout the day, I’ve gotten goosebumps as I’ve relived snippets of Obama’s cuhrazy acceptance speech in my head.
Yet, my Obama fever has broken slightly with the sobering reality that Prop 8 has passed in California. It stuns me that voters can swiftly and decisively protect the rights of farm animals, but fail to defend the right of human beings to marry.
So, while I revel in Obama’s victory, it’s clear to me that there is so much more work to be done. But before the battle rages on, before we talk about accountability and making good on promises, I’m just going to breathe in this moment. Because today, I’m not just “lucky,” “blessed,” or “fortunate,” but proud to be an American.
