Paper Heart Trailer

29 04 2009

Michael Cera (swoon) x Charlyne Yi (the dweeby asian girl in knocked up) x Geekball Romance = A must see.

A romantic pseudo-documentary written, produced by, and starring Charlyne Yi (23), who by the way is Michael Cera’s (21) real-life girlfriend. The film follows Charlyne’s quest for love’s meaning, while her real relationship with Michael Cera buds/blooms/blossoms. They’ve got to be the quirkiest couple in the biz. I don’t care what the fangirls say, I dig it.

Happy Earth Day…Again!

22 04 2009

dianne_earth_day

Whoops! Consider this my first Hurley Sashimi retraction…sort of. I mistakenly named March 28, the day of Earth Hour, Earth Day. And according to this morning’s headlines, that was a lie. My Bad. So, here’s to the real Earth Day, today, April 22. And because I’m feeling rather moded, I don’t feel like coming up with anything new, so I’m just going to re-post my previous Earth Day entry:

Not too many people care about Earth Day, or ever know when it is, but it really should be one of the more celebrated days of the year, don’t you think? I care waaaay more about the Earth than I do Columbus. If today weren’t Saturday, I’d even suggest we all take the day off! . I suggest we all take the day off!

So ride your bikes, fly your kites, compost, recycle, feed your plants with greywater, tote around your reusable shopping bags, drink from stainless steel water bottles, place a brick in your cistern, properly dispose of your electronics, and do other responsible things today..and for the rest of the new earth year! Let’s cool the globe.

Huge x Grafitti x Typography x Sculpture = Awesomeness.

The Neo-Con Collective, made up of New York street artists Aakash Nihalani, Ellis Gallagher and Poster Boy have teamed up with U.K. Graffiti extraordinaire, Zeus, for their first West Coast exhibition at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art in West Hollywood, CA. Their prints, photography, and mixed-media artwork collectively highlight what already exists in urban cityscapes and make for mind-blowingly elaborate art installations. If you’re in LA, you should go. now.

make something cool everyday 2009

14 04 2009

*disclaimer: alright, so this tuesday’s post is not-so-typographical, but it IS freakin’ cool and will provide yet another source of daily inspiration.

New Year’s Resolutions hardly ever live to see the month of April. But if you’re artist, Brock Davis, you’ve got resolve of steel. This year, Davis has promised to Make Something Cool Everyday and by golly, he has stuck to his guns. His portfolio is diverse, featuring googly eye sculptures, m&m scenes, yarn-wrapped weaponry, shattered non-breakables and so much more. Here are a few of my faves:

thursday thaumaturgy: POMO 2009!

9 04 2009

thaumaturgy \THAW-muh-tuhr-jee\, noun:
the performance of miracles or magic.

pomo09

Yep. Consider this shameless. This week’s Thaumaturge Award goes to the organization I work for, Kularts. An SF-based non-profit arts organization, Kularts is the nation’s premier presenter of tribal and contemporary Pilipino arts. Since 1985, we’ve produced innovative artistic works, fostered mentorship among emerging and established artists, facilitated local and international collaborations; designed and implemented educational outreach programs for elementary through college age students; lead cultural tours to the Philippines, and more! Our mission is to inform and expand the understanding of Pilipino American culture through works that address contemporary issues in our community; to preserve the spirit and integrity of ancient Pilipino art forms; and to nurture the artistic development of Pilipino American artists.

Enter the PLUG.

From April 17-26, Kularts will be presenting its annual flagship production, The Post-Modern American Pilipino Performance Project, or POMO.

POMO 2009 features hypnotic, tantalizing, heart-stopping, off-center performances in Queer Theater, Music, Poetics, and Contemporary Circus featuring an incredible selection of cutting edge Pin@y artists from the Bay to LA!

This year, we are proud to present:

Queer performance vocalist, Dwayne Calizo, in The Toxic Cock-Tale: Hold the Retro Virus Please!!

Aerialist, Kennedy Kabasares, with poet, Traci Kato-Kiriyama (both of zero3 fame) in Pull

Los Angeles-based actor, Giovanni Ortega, in Kalayaan (Freedom)

Father-Daughter musical duo, Jen & Dan Soriano, in Viajeras: A Song Cycle in Tribute to Overseas Filipino Musicians

And the reunited resistance music band, Diskarte Namin.

flutter: the new twitter

8 04 2009

looks like i’ve missed the twitter bus all together, but i still might be able to jump on the new craze: Flutter! Slate V’s mockumentary on this new ‘nano-blogging’ application jabs at Twitter-Mania, while suggesting that 140 characters to let people know what we’re doing is entirely superfluous. dryly satirical. i love it.

no offense to the elite members of the Twitterati that i call my friends. and no offense to vowels, either. wrd.
