Michael DeForge Print

30 11 2009

i saw this over at booooooom and instantly fell in love. why? could it be that i had the same haircut and chubby cheeks as a child? or that i’ve always wanted to wear a red peacoat with no pants (heh. just kidding?)? or that beyond the murky, hegemonic, chaos is something pure to be discovered ? yes, yes, and yes! let’s step through and see what’s on the other side…

more of michael deforge/king trash’s work here.

Interview with Tim Burton

19 11 2009

tim burton’s haunting, yet whimsically fantastic characters and dreamscapes fascinate me. watch this video and get inside tim’s head for 7 minutes. he discusses drawing, motivation for his works, why he wears striped socks!, and his loyalty to hands-on, tactile creative processes.

Everyone Should Read…

18 11 2009

any book that encourages people to dream and draw magical watermelon boats gets a thumbs up from me. the illustrations – broccoli trees and jelly bean cars – really bring me back to my childhood.

a FULL PREVIEW of the book is available here.

10 Days

18 11 2009

“Everyday the news is transmitted to us across the globe. We’re left saddened, scared, inspired, skeptical, hopeful, angry, or simply numb. But the next day brings a new set of stories painting over the memories of yesterday’s events.”

10 Days by Ripo. i love this. you will too.

1:AM Gallery 1000 Howard St. San Franicso, CA 94103
Nov 13-Dec 12, 2009

Tabi Tabi Po is dedicated to celebrating Filipino folklore through urban contemporary art. The Kapre, Manananggal, Duwende, Tikbalang, and Aswang are just a sampling of the haunting creatures that are brought to life in this exhibit. A percentage of the art sales will be donated to the victims of typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng through BAYAN Philippines and BALSA (Bayanihan para sa Sambayanan).

The curator, James “gaNyan” Garcia, has put together a killer lineup that includes Filipino artists from the US, Philippines (he partnered with Pablo Gallery in the PI), and even Norway.

The artists include:

Stateside:
Angry Woebots, Stuter, gaNyan, Marikina, Gem Mateo, CeCe Carpio, Pancho Abalos, Mark Canto, Miguel (Bounce) Perez, Darvin (Boohi) Vida , England Hidalgo, Jerrell Conner, Nic Cowan, Andre Sibayan, Ciriaco Sayoc II, J2, Marc Aure, Peabe, Marlon Sagana Ingram, Minette Mangahas, Dyno, Christopher de Leon, Cat Chiu Phillips, Isabel (Pepper), Roxas, John Yoyogi Fortes, Allison Torneros, Mel Vera Cruz, Simbulan, Ray Haguisan, and me!

on joy and hope and sorrow

6 10 2009

joyous

on joy and family:
today is the 6th anniversary of the passing of our dear sister-friend, elaine joy aton de la cruz. i was so blessed this morning to spend some time with joy’s family, our family – auntie ligaya, uncle bart, and sister christina – to mourn, remember, celebrate, and just BE in the spirit of JOY (over silog and sisig – pinoy soul food, if you will :) ).

on joy and hope:
in 2004, shortly after she passed, i named joy, “hope” in Story, KP UCSD’s 13th annual pilipino cultural celebration (pcc). at the time, though i know what i felt, i don’t think i could have articulated why i named her hope. only now am i starting to discover who hope is…

hope is the ability to find opportunity in every crisis.

hope, not just a feeling, but an ability, a skill, a craft that must be practiced, honed, and nurtured lest it be lost or forgotten. though i am still heartbroken, though i miss her dearly, in joy’s life and in joy’s death i have found opportunity…to cherish and protect my friendships, to make time for annual gatherings, to harbor a child-like imagination, to be spontaneous and daring, to live what i love, to seek truths, to love fiercely, to write furiously, to use commas, dashes, and ellipses with reckless abandon, to defend my dreams, and to discover the parts of me that are joy. because of joy, for joy, with joy – i have the opportunity to LIVE. because of hope, for hope, with hope – i can be joyful while living.

on joy and sorrow:
i stumbled upon the following poem while scrolling through facebook status updates (lame? probably). i found it too appropriate for a day like today.

happy joy day, everyone.

On Joy and Sorrow
Kahlil Gibran

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises
was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being,
the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup
that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit,
the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart
and you shall find it is only that which has
given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart,
and you shall see that in truth you are weeping
for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,”
and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board,
remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales
between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver,
needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

dont_postpone_joyembrace your sorrow.

remember hope.

My Face, Punk.

16 09 2009

A while ago, I sent Damien Weighill of Your Face blog a photo of my face in hopes that he’d put his illustrative stank on it. After months of waiting, I’d almost forgotten about the whole thing until he sent me an email that he’d uploaded my portrait to his site! While I do wish he’d hooked me up with a little more pigment, I’m thoroughly excited to be depicted as Max in Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.

Check me out!

(No, I’m not embarrassed by the picture on the left…those dinosaur onesies are the coolest. and that haircut! even cooler.)

Thanks, Damien!
