Green of the Day: White House Edible Garden

25 03 2009

obamagarden-1

Following Eleanor Roosevelt’s 1940’s Victory Garden example, Michelle Obama announced last week that she, along with 23 fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School, will begin digging up the soil and planting a 1,100 square foot Edible Garden on the White House Lawn. Her foremost hope is to educate children and families about eating healthier, locally grown produce at a time when obesity and diabetes have become a national concern.

The new garden will contain a diverse selection of fruits & vegetables, as chosen by the White House kitchen staff, including: tomatoes, cilantro, various lettuces, spinach, collards, kale, arugula, berries, and a variety of herbs. There will also be two beehives for honey and a compost pile. Beets didn’t make the cut because President Obama doesn’t like them. Gosh, he and I have so much in common: Left-handed, Check. Leo, Check. Dislikes beets, Check…hmmm. I’m starting to think I’ve got a shot at the presidency. Hurley Sashimi 2020? I digress. The food grown in the garden will be served for private family dinners and other state and official events.

The following video is part of the “Eat the View” Campaign to plant high-impact gardens in high profile places. They’d been circulating petitions for quite some time for the Obama’s to replant the First Garden. It’s cute. And educational. Watch it.

Pareng Barack: Filipinos in Obama’s America

27 01 2009

pareng_barack

On Sunday, I attended the book signing for Benjamin Pimentel’s Pareng Barack: Filipinos in Obama’s America at the SF Public Library. I haven’t read it yet, but the small book is about how Filipinos responded, “often with excitement, sometimes with fear and dread,” to Barack Obama’s historic campaign and election. Having just returned from D.C., imagine my excitement to purchase a book with the words “Obama” and “Filipinos” on the cover.

The event wasn’t that well-attended, and the question-and-answer portion turned more into a long-winded-comment-and-answer session, but I was inspired by Pimentel’s reflections and his eagerness (the book was released 2 weeks after the Nov. 4 election) to chronicle the diverse perspectives of the Fil-Am community in the context of Obama’s phenomenal rise to the presidency.

I found one of the author’s reflections to be particularly stirring. During the event, Pimentel noted that he was 8 years old when President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in the Philippines. From that point on, for 14 years, his own political views (ultimately cynical and pessimistic) would be shaped by a dictatorship. Today, one of Pimentel’s sons is 9 years old. How wondrous it will be for this father to witness how his son’s views on politics, race, and social conditions are shaped by an (hopefully awesome 8-year) Obama administration.

“It will be Obama’s face and voice that my sons will see and hear on television and on the Internet over the next four years, maybe longer. It will be Pareng Barack who will play a critical role in defining my sons’ future in America.”
-Benjamin Pimentel

Not sure yet where you can get your own copy (I’ve been looking all over the internet, and can’t find ANY purchase information), but as soon as I figure it out, I’ll let you know!

there’s already a movie…

6 11 2008

edward_norton_obama_done

well, a documentary…now with the perfect ending.

“Long before President-elect Barack Obama had even made up his mind to run for the highest office in the land, Edward Norton and his Class 5 Films production company were already documenting the Senator’s life. The 39-year-old actor said that he became inspired by Obama’s 2004 speech at the National Democratic Convention and felt inspired to capture someone from his generation — and not his parent’s — inspiring so many and rising in leadership…”

Ed Norton is one of my faves (and we have the same birthday!). Can’t wait.

Read more about the film at current and ecorazzi.

it’s a new day.

5 11 2008

frontpages

As I woke up this morning, the fuzziness of last night’s celebration came into sharp focus as I realized that, this time, there were no close calls or stolen elections, but instead the headlines read that Barack Obama is really going to be the next president of the United States. Throughout the day, I’ve gotten goosebumps as I’ve relived snippets of Obama’s cuhrazy acceptance speech in my head.

Yet, my Obama fever has broken slightly with the sobering reality that Prop 8 has passed in California. It stuns me that voters can swiftly and decisively protect the rights of farm animals, but fail to defend the right of human beings to marry.

So, while I revel in Obama’s victory, it’s clear to me that there is so much more work to be done. But before the battle rages on, before we talk about accountability and making good on promises, I’m just going to breathe in this moment. Because today, I’m not just “lucky,” “blessed,” or “fortunate,” but proud to be an American.
